Vehicle Burglaries Being Reported

Shenandoah Police Department patch image

Shenandoah visitors are reporting vehicle burglaries, many involving smashed windows or other forcible means of entry into their locked vehicles. As many of our residents know, we also get theft reports involving unlocked vehicles. These are some of the most preventable crimes seen. We need your help to reduce these numbers!

Thefts from vehicles can occur at all hours, day or night. All vehicle burglaries generally have one thing in common:  something to steal that is valuable is left in the car. Many vehicle burglaries are "crimes of opportunity." Vehicle burglary prevention, like all crime prevention, involves limiting the criminal's opportunity to commit the crime. With very little time and effort, you can make a huge difference in your vulnerability to vehicle burglary.

You can help by following these prevention tips:

  • Remove your valuables from the vehicle.
  • Do not leave bags or backpacks that could suggest valuables are present.
  • Park your vehicle in well-lit areas when possible.
  • Always secure your vehicle.
  • Never leave your vehicle running and unattended, even for just a moment.

The concepts above can be characterized by this simple three-word phrase.

TAKE, LOCK, HIDE

Take your valuables ...  lock up your valuables... hide your valuables!
