Shenandoah City Council Meeting June 10, 2020 Update

Attendance: Present:  Mayor Ritch Wheeler, Mayor Pro Tem Charlie Bradt,  Mike McLeod,  Dean Gristy, Ted Fletcher and   Ron Raymaker

 ITEM 7: Shenandoah Resident Scholarship RecipientsEach year the Shenandoah Resident Scholarship is awarded to Shenandoah seniors who apply for the scholarship through an essay process. Scholarship Chair Kacie Bevers announced this year’s scholarship recipients Abby Lee and Ansh Mittra.   Abby,  the daughter of Tamara and Steven Lee, will attend Louisiana Tech University and major in business administration. Ansh, the son of Neeraj and Ruchi Mittra, will attend the University of Texas and major in biology. Congratulations to the recipients.       No Council action required.

ITEM 8:  National Night Out and Halloween Safe Streets - The Shenandoah Police Department recommends that the dates for National Night Out and Halloween Safe Streets be Monday, October 5, and Saturday, October 31, respectively. In addition, the department recommends setting routes for 2020 as well as 2021 to offer residents the opportunity to take advantage of pre- and post-season sales for decorations.    The route for 2020 will be Cedarwood, Maplewood, Driftwood, Saddlewood, Thornwood and Cherrywood  and for 2021  will be Silverwood and Silverstone. Council voted 5-0 to the dates and routes as presented.\

ITEM 9: Residential Permit Fee Schedule-  During the May 13 and 27 meetings, Council discussed reducing the construction fees for residential additions. All residential fees are paid by the general contractor at the time an application is submitted and includes all sub-contractor fees, plan reviews, and inspections.  Council asked for language changes from the city attorney to eliminate fees for residential improvements and pools.  Council voted 4-1 to approve the changes to the residential permit fee as presented.

City Administrator Comments

  • Vision Park drainage project is nearing completion.
  • The internal aspect of the water tower project is almost completed and staff is ready to move things back in before the outside aspect of repainting begins.
  • Entergy’s work project on the Wellman Road loop is underway.
  • There have been multiple Vitamin Shoppes in the area that have been hit by burglars and Shenandoah Police Department is keeping a close watch on our Vitamin Shoppe in Portofino.
  • June 18 will be the date of a City of Shenandoah Blood Drive for the Gulf Coast Blood Center. The drive will be held in Council Chambers from 9 am to 3 pm and appointments may be made online.    Online registration

Executive Session

 According to the Texas Open Meetings Act, Chapter 551 of Government Code as follows:

  • Government Code  § 551.074: Personnel Matters
    • City Administrator Evaluation

The open session was adjourned to executive session at  7:52  pm. Council returned to open session at  9:26 pm. 

No action was taken in executive session.

After returning to open session, Council voted 5-0 to authorize City Administrator Kathie Reyer to purchase property from Harold Denton. 

 The meeting was adjourned at 9:27 pm.
